Two enterprising former colleagues have gone into partnership in Caerphilly as funeral directors, after receiving business advice and a Start Up Loan through Business in Focus.
Nathan Prosser opened G.Brown & N.Prosser Funeral Directors with his business partner Glen Brown in Oakdale, and the pair already have their eye on expansion, so they can hold funeral services on site.
The business partners look after all aspects of the funerals in their care – organising and taking care of the funeral plans, arrange details with family members and handling the logistics.
Nathan and his business partner Glen had worked together previously within the same industry, and they have been doing the job for more than 10 years. Seeing an opportunity to offer the community a new funeral director and to bring some of their ideas to fruition, they spent some years looking for the right premises for their new business.
Their initial plans began to take real shape when they attended a ‘Taking the Plunge’ workshop with Business Wales – one of the contracts run by Business in Focus on behalf of Welsh Government.
Their Business Wales business adviser recommended them for a Start Up Loan from Business in Focus – an official delivery partner for the Start Up Loans Company. The Start Up Loan scheme offers low interest personal loans to help start new businesses, or for businesses under 2 years old which need funding to grow.
Nathan and Glen used the Start Up Loan to renovate their premises, purchase equipment and for advertising. Nathan says: “The loan application process was very easy, we had lots of help from our Start Up Loan business adviser – he was on hand during the application process, and we still receive calls from him from time to time to see how the business is doing.”
“Things are changing fast within the funeral industry, and the public is growing more aware of the choices open to them. There is far more choice available around every aspect of the funeral process.
“I think many of these changes are positive because they allow the families involved to have as much control as they would like over proceedings. However, one thing that doesn’t change is the fact that people need and appreciate attentive personal service and support at a difficult times of their lives.
Nathan adds: “As far as getting our business off the ground is concerned, I would recommend that all new businesses take the help that is out there – companies like Business in Focus have great resources that you can tap into, which makes the process a lot easier than you would think.”
